History - origins of the Enzian Hotel
From bed-and-breakfast to 4-star superior hotel operation
Guests at the Hotel Enzian would never suspect that the Enzian is more than 60 years old. Those who look closely may notice the old black-and-white pictures of Obertauern in the hallways. They are original pictures from Grandma Kuhn's attic...
One thing is for sure: in the last 60 years, the Enzian has changed significantly. The efforts of your hosts and the hard-working Enzian team have served to transform a small bed-and-breakfast into one of the largest operations in Obertauern. Complete with four-star superior rating.
The humble beginning: a bed and breakfast
The Hotel Enzian was opened in 1955 by the Kuhn family (the grandparents of Elisabeth and Michaela Veit) as a small bed-and-breakfast with 15 beds. Gradually, over the years, the establishment grew into a comfortable hotel with 65 beds. In 1978, an apartment building with 18 apartments was constructed next to the Enzian.
Originally, the Mankei Alm was just a small snack bar. This was opened by Othmar Kuhn in 1950, beside Obertauern's first ski lift, the Plattenkar platter lift. 37 years later, this small establishment was replaced by the first ski hut, the Veit family's Mankei Alm. Since then, the popular Mankei Alm has been expanded on two occasions. Today the facility offers seating for over 120 people inside the restaurant and space for some 200 more out on the spacious sun terrace with views of Obertauern.
Incidentally, the construction of the Gamsleiten lift and Obertauern's first snow grooming machine also involved the efficient grandfather of the current hosts.
Expansion & development
In 1983, Othmar Kuhn's son-in-law Walter Veit finally took over the hotel business that he had so successfully managed until then. At this time, several adjoining parcels of land were purchased to allow for further expansion. With regular investments, the Enzian has now evolved into a four-star operation.
Capital investments have resulted in a 4-star superior rating
In the summer of 2010, the whole building was renovated and expanded once again. The attic floor was converted into a luxurious Panorama Suite. The outstanding efforts of the Enzian team earned the hotel a 4-star superior rating in 2010. We have successfully maintained this standard to the present day.
The Enzian today
These days the Hotel Enzian contains 130 beds, making it one of the largest establishments in Obertauern. Walter Veit's daughters, Elisabeth and Michaela, energetically support their father in the role of host. Head chef Julien Lefebvre is Elisabeth's partner, and therefore also belongs to the Veit family.
Their son Paul, born in 2016, currently represents the fourth generation to grow up right here in the Enzian.
